Devlog 2: I Have Returned!
Hello everyone! I'm really excited to tell you all that I've released v0.0.6 of Fredbear's Adventure for you guys to play! In this post, I wanted to go over some of the new things and explain the future of the project.
Change 1 - "Take Cake to the Children"
After many long months, there's finally some real(ish) gameplay to be had! As described by Day 2's objective, the player is tasked with taking cake to the children. In the restaurant are three children with colored party hats; these are the children that need cake. Cake can be obtained in the kitchen at the two ovens when they are done baking. The amount of time left baking is displayed on the ovens via four colored lights. While a cake is baking, the player can hold E on the oven to significantly speed up the process.
Overall, I'm quite happy with this day's mechanics as a proof-of-concept. However, as they currently stand, these mechanics need major revisions. Values still need to be tweaked for a fairer experience, and (in all honesty) the game isn't all that "fun" yet. In updates coming soon, I hope to add in some new things that turn this day from something fairly mundane to something much more interesting. Once Day 2's objective is solid, I'll move on to Day 3. Of course, if you have any comments or suggestions, feel free to leave them on this page. I would appreciate it!
Change 2 - Volume Control
There's not much I can add here. It's pretty basic: press V on the title screen to adjust the volume. Yes, yes, very innovative I know. You may applaud now.
Change 3 - Game Over, Man! Game Over!
On Day 2, if you fail to sufficiently feed one of the children that needs fed, the game will send you to a fail screen. This screen was greatly inspired by the Dozer enemy from Grace on Roblox. I wanted to add a bit of "spookiness" to the game, since there wasn't much of it yet (don't worry, I've got lots of ideas for more spooky stuff down the line!). Besides the whole "boo" aspect of it, this screen also sends you back to the start of the day. If you want to see this fail screen on any day at any time, press L on your keyboard five times (this is a debug command and will be removed eventually, sorry).
Change 4 - Behind the Scenes
I won't dwell on this too much, since I discussed many of my frustrations in the previous devlog. This update features a LOT of behind-the-scenes refactoring and tweaking of the project's structure. Things got moved around, changed, and deleted, such as the old "layering" system I described in my last devlog. That was replaced with a more foolproof system at the cost of slightly lengthening the time it takes to move between rooms. I could sit here for hours talking about all of the changes I made that aren't visible in-game, but I'll stop myself.
What's Next?
There are still a few things about this update that need changing. For one, there's still a bug in the backstage area where you can walk on top of some shelving. This is not intentional, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. These changes and more are coming in future updates, mark my words. For new content, I've got a plethora of ideas written down that I want to eventually add. If there's anything you think would be neat to see in the game, let me know in the comments below. I appreciate comments and suggestions like that!
That's all I have for now. Please play this new version of Fredbear's Adventure! and tell me what you think in the comments. Thank you so much for your time, and thank you for playing my game. Have a great day!
