Devlog 17: Mystery Box + Watchdog
Hello everyone! Welcome to Endurance v0.1.4. This version has a few new tweaks and additions.
The Mystery Box
There's a new collectable in Endurance! The mystery box is a yellow item with a big white question mark on it. Collecting it either gives the player a random power-up or inflicts the player with a random trap. Collect it at your own risk!
Watchdog
A new enemy has also been added, although you probably won't ever see it. The Watchdog is a large gray enemy that only spawns under one condition: the player isn't moving. Upon spawning, the Watchdog will continuously chase the player. It is faster than you (you can temporarily outrun it with a dash), it can't be killed with the dash, and your power-ups are disabled. It will end up killing you and resulting in a game over.
The Watchdog acts as a sort-of "anti-cheat." One easy way to exploit the enemies' AI was to stand in a corner. The only enemies you would have to deal with are the impostors. This enemy counteracts that by requiring you to move to avoid an instant game over. However, one way to bypass the Watchdog is to keep moving into the map border. The game won't think you're moving and won't spawn in the Watchdog.
So, why even add in an anti-cheat in the first place? I'm more so testing whether or not the game even needs one. The exploit of standing in the corner has been brought up to me, but my current opinion on it is: Endurance is a singleplayer game that currently has no leaderboards. All you are doing by standing in a corner is watching a meaningless number go up. I want to focus development on adding fun things for people who actually play the game.
TL;DR: the Watchdog is a test to see whether or not Endurance still works well with an anti-cheat. If it doesn't, I'll probably just end up scrapping the enemy entirely. Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Other Tweaks
This update also featured some bug fixes I noticed while testing and some polish.
- The player no longer becomes translucent during their second dash and onward.
- Some typos in the Enemy and Collectable guides were corrected.
- Text is displaying weirdly in the Basic Gameplay guide. (I'm unsure of what is causing this, so it currently goes unfixed. I'll look for a fix later, sorry!)
- Collectables that despawn when a trap is picked up now play their "pick-up" animation instead of just vanishing
That's all for now. Once again, please give this version of Endurance a try and tell me what you think. Thank you so much for reading, and have a wonderful day!
