Devlog 22: Goodbye For Now!

Hello everyone! This will be my last devlog on Endurance for the foreseeable future.

Why Now?

I have three main reasons for stopping development of Endurance.

  1. For one reason or another, I have felt a severe lack of motivation in continuing work on Endurance. During those first few months when I restarted work on the game, I was highly motivated and put it countless hours on updates and additions to Endurance. However, recently, I can barely open up the project before not wanting to dive back in and work on it. I don't know if it is because of fatigue or pure laziness, but I can't find the motivation to keep working on Endurance.
  2. Looking over my code, I have realized that my game's programming has turned in a collection of hacks and quick-fixes that have hindered scalability. My initial goal for remaking this game was to improve my code-writing ability and to write my game so that it could be easily added on to. For a while, I succeeded at that goal, but recently, my code quality has dipped (in my opinion). So, opening up my project, I worry that I'm going to break something every single time I try to add a feature or fix a bug, leading to my lack of updates.
  3. In my opinion, I have begun to exhibit a trait that is seen by many indie developers: feature creep. While not as extreme as some other games (cough cough, Yandere Simulator), I still think that I've started to ignore my planned-out Trello board of ideas and mechanics in favor of adding small features that both add nothing of value to the base game and muddy my already-messy code base.

You are free to agree or disagree with my reasons; but, to me, these are the main factors influencing my choice to end development of Endurance.

What's Next?

Endurance is basically complete, and it will remain here on itch.io for anyone to play. Now, I want to take the time to move on to projects unrelated to this arcade survival game, and instead focus on new, refreshing ideas. These ideas may not be original, but I'm getting tired of making games based on single-colored squares.

I extend my gratitude to everyone who has joined me on this journey of Endurance development. I thank you for your feedback, play-testing, and ideas (which are still written down and not deleted). At some point, very far into the future, I may return to Endurance one final time, hopefully with better skills, and turn the game into the fun high-score game it was always meant to be.

As a quick aside, I have released the main theme song that plays during gameplay on my Bandcamp for anyone to download, if you wish.

For the final time on this page, thank you for reading, and have a wonderful day!
